What You Will Be Doing
The Division of Forestry (DOF) provides wildland fire protection for over 150 million acres of state, private and municipal lands throughout Alaska. The Division’s Fire & Aviation program seeks a motivated, high-energy team member to lead our Division aviation section, including oversight of pilots, aircraft mechanics, managers, fixed wing, and helicopter. Duties include the readiness and safety of the division's aviation section. This position interacts with the State of Alaska and interagency fire management and aviation staff to ensure readiness and is the key point of contact for the Division’s aviation section.
Mission and Culture
The Division of Forestry fosters a mission-driven culture with the responsibility for the protection of Alaska’s values including life and property from wildland fire. Risk-based decision making and strategic planning are the foundation of the Division’s fire preparedness and response effort. The Division of Forestry works closely with federal, state, and local emergency response agencies to provide wildland fire management and protection for the State of Alaska. The Aviation Manager position is integral to building, developing, supporting and maintaining those relationships.
Benefits of Joining Our Team
The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection values being a leader in wildland fire management and being part of the national wildland fire response that prepares our state and the country for the complexities and rapidly changing wildland fire environment. Our team works with dynamic, public service-oriented people and agencies from across Alaska and at the national level. This position offers opportunities to guide wildland fire management in Alaska to protect our communities and critical values. Based on National Interagency Incident Management System qualifications, the incumbent may accept assignments and serve as a team member that responds to wildland and all-risk incidents in Alaska and nationally.
The Working Environment You Can Expect
Although this position is primarily office-based, daily physical fitness is encouraged, and a work schedule can be made to accommodate. There are opportunities for field site visits to projects, fire tours, and staff rides. If visiting one of our remote duty stations, rustic living in a fast-paced, mission-driven emergency response setting can be expected.
Opportunities exist to represent the State of Alaska, Western State Fire Managers, and the National Association of State Foresters on national committees and working groups, developing aviation policy and best fire suppression and management practices. International training and resource-sharing opportunities exist through our Northwest Compact agreement with Canada.
The Aviation Program Manager is the organization's chief pilot and instructor and exercises substantial scope and latitude or responsibility to direct and manage an aviation/maintenance program and aircraft fleet whose planning and operations are statewide in scope.
